Welcome I’m Sonya Beutel an independent midwife working in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

I knew I wanted to be a midwife after completing my General Nursing Training in 1992.  What other job in the world could you meet people, join their families and be there for the most amazing time in their lives.  I never really knew how special that journey was until I walked it for the first time seven years ago when my first daughter was born.  I now have three beautiful girls.

Qualifications

Certificate of General Nursing 1992
Bachelor of Nursing 1995
Graduate Diploma of Midwifery 1997

I completed my Midwifery Qualifications in 1997 after 8 years working in paediatrics.  Since then I’ve worked in the Public Health System until 2004, when I started caring for families in their homes.  This is the best decision I have ever made.

Midwifery – what an amazing career!  I love sharing the most amazing moment in someone’s life, watching new life enter the world.  Caring for families throughout their pregnancy and birth journey is the most rewarding profession I could ever imagine.  I feel I become part of every new baby’s family I care for.  They open their homes and their hearts and together we share in the miracle of life.

I believe in  promoting a family focus with pregnancy and birth and encourage, if desired, the education and involvement of other children in this amazing family experience.

Although I’m primarily based in Toowoomba I am happy to extend my services to  families outside this area and I will negotiate distance for travel.

What is a Midwife
A midwife is a person who, having been regularly admitted to a midwifery educational programme, duly recognised in the country in which it is located, has successfully completed the prescribed course of studies in midwifery and has acquired the requisite qualifications to be registered and/or legally licensed to practise midwifery.

The midwife is recognised as a responsible and accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct births on the midwife’s own responsibility and to provide care for the newborn and the infant. This care includes preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, the accessing of medical care or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures.

The midwife has an important task in health counselling and education, not only for the woman, but also within the family and the community. This work should involve antenatal education and preparation for parenthood and may extend to women’s health, sexual or reproductive health and child care. A midwife may practise in any setting including the home, community, hospitals, clinics or health units”

Childbirth is an experience
In a woman’s life
That holds the power
To transform her
Forever

Passing through
These powerful gates
~ In her own way ~
Remembering
All the generations of women
Who walk with her….
She is never alone
